A Chokwe mask, Angola. This is a Pwo mask, it's purpose is to honour ancestral women of the Chowke. Carved from wood this small mask depicts a face with almond eyes and thin slit eyeholes. The mouth is slightly downturned and exposes small filed teeth. The forehead has an inscribed symbol that is prominent in Pwo masks, it is said to depict a cosmogram. The hair of the mask is braided from red textile with attached seeds, cowrie shells, and beads. Height 19 cm, width 23 cm, depth 21 cm
