A Kanaga mask, Dogon people, Mali. Kanaga masks are worn at dama rituals that are performed to usher the spirits of dead from the vilage. This large mask is a hollowed rectangular form carved from wood. At the top of the head is a tall piece of wood with small carved figures at it's peak. Leather straps secure the two horzontal pieces of wood that create a double cross form. The mask is coloured with black and brown pigment. Height 94.5 cm, width 47 cm, depth 9.7 cm
