A Kumu mask, Democratic Republic of Congo. The Kumu people inhabit the Ituri rainforests in the eastern part of the Congo. Masks in Kumu society are used in initiation ceremonies for coming of age. Carved from wood this mask in an oval shape with blocking contrasting pigments in brown, beige, and black. The eyes are small oval shapes and the mouth hole hints at a smile.
