Description:
A rare cinnabar lacquer table screen late Qing dynasty, 19th century, the rectangular screen intricately carved on one side with a panel of scholarly figures crossing a bridge towards a pavilion set on a rocky shore, and further pavilions set among the pine and willow trees, all enclosed within a band of lotus scrolls and peony vignettes, the reverse painted with flowering plants and rockwork, supported on a finely carved stand centred with a rectangular panel depicting a sage and attendant on a bridge in a similar landscape, within further lotus scroll and key-fret borders, 54 cm high, 57 cm wide. Other Notes: a carved lacquer screen of this form decorated with the 'Red Cliff' scene is illustrated in Masterpieces of Chinese carved lacquer ware in the National Palace Museum, Taipei, 1971, pl. 33.
