A c.1900 gilded 9ct. yellow gold miner's sweetheart pick-and-shovel brooch, the crossed tools highlighted with gold nuggets and gold wire. 6.92gm. Note: during the colonial gold rush period, there was a fashion for miners to give such brooches to their 'sweetheart'. Similar brooches are said to be South African relating to the Transvaal area where gold was discovered in 1886.
