A huanghuali and hongmu three-drawer desk, Qing dynasty. 147 cm long, 85.5 cm high, 54 cm deep. Provenance: The Estate of Emilia Stella, Milan, Italy, acquired in Beijing or Shanghai between 1850 and 1870 (letter of provenance, Mossgreen). Mossgreen, Melbourne, 21 November 2011, Sale MA134, Lot 627. Private collection, Sydney. The current lot was a part of the Estate of Emilia Stella, whose great-great grandfather was based in Beijing and Shanghai between 1850 and 1870, where he held a high diplomatic position. According to the letter of provenance, it would have been at this time that he acquired the important Chinese artworks in his collection.
