A sterling silver medal inscribed 'From the Members Of/The Stirling Abstinence Society/And/The Total Abstinence Societies Of/Monteith, Kippen, Bannockburn And/To Mr James Mitchell,/Officer of Excise,/President/ of the Stirling Total Abstinence Society,/ This Medal and a Purse of Sovereigns Were Presented,/At a Soiree Held in the Corn Exchange, Stirling/On the Evening of 1st January 1840,/For His Magnanimous Conduct,/ in Forwarding the Interest of These Societies,/ by Able and Eloquent Addresses,/Delivered to Them on Different Occasions;/As Well As a Token/Of the Estimation in Which They Hold/ His Private Virtue' and on the reverse inscribed 'Fear Not While Acting Justly', maker's mark only (J.D.), presumably John Duff, a local Stirling Silversmith. Ornate shield shaped foliate frame and swivel loop for a chain. Length 10.5 cm. Width 8 cm
