The Art Union, Volume VIII, circa 1840 one volume of the monthly journal of Fine Arts, published from 1839 - 1848, published by Hodgson & Graves, edited by Samuel Carter Hall, edited by William Henry Fox Talbot. Other Notes: The Art-Union, fore-runner of the Art Journal, was the most important British 19th century art magazine. It was founded in 1839 by the print publishers Hodgson & Graves. The first issue was published on February 15th 1839 in an edition of 750 copies. Samuel Carter Hall was the first editor and soon acquired an important stake in the magazine. In 1848 the magazine was bought by George Virtue and in 1849 the name was changed to The Art Journal.
