Description:
An early 16th/17th century period oak carved boss or post capital, compact squat circular shape carved with a snake biting the wing of a griffin that is devouring an eagle. Diameter 12 cm, height 5.5 cm. Scratch inscribed underneath Haughtan (tower?) 1781, possibly a reference to Hoghton tower, Lancashire. Weighted with lead as a paperweight.
