The Westgate bridge, Melbourne: first intended to be opened in 1971, the construction of the bridge was not completed until 1978 following delays, a catastrophic collapse which resulted in the loss of 35 lives, a huge cost over-run and a Royal commission. A small group of items associated with this somewhat forgotten series of events: a plaque 'Presented to the members and Management of the West gate bridge authority on the occasion of the integration of the authority with the country Roads board on 30 June, 1982', a 2-section panoramic photograph of the bridge during construction (dated Feb.1976), a framed Les Tanner cartoon ('We will link Westgate bridge with St.Kilda Rd. So long as we can link Westgate bridge with Westgate bridge') and another by Ron Tandberg ('It's because of the rolling strikes!', 'I'm glad something's rolling on the bridge' with 1971, 1973 and 1976 crossed out on a nearby sign, replaced by 'Opening in 18 months'.).
