Description:
A silver vesta case, the rectangular case with engraved decoration in a Maori inspired design, inscribed 'Hurunui 14th August 1879', and 'E. W. Ralp' to the reverse. The lid marked a. F. & Co, possibly Adolph Frankan & Co. Provenance: The Ruth Simon Collection, acquired privately from the above in 2005. Other Notes: the ship called Hurunui ran between New Zealand and London, date of departure at one stage from London to New Zealand 14th August 1879. One of five ships built in 1875 by Palmer & Co. For the New Zealand Shipping Company's flag, after sailing the seas for forty years, the Hurunui was sunk on 4th May 1915 off St Catherine's point, Isle of Wight, by a German Submarine.
