A Japanese Literati subject Sumie six panel screen, Edo period (1603-1868), circa 1700, Sumi ink on paper of a group of sage like Chinese men perusing a scroll with karako (attendants), probably one of a pair depicting the 'Seven scholars of the bamboo grove' subject. A background of classical waterfalls, bamboo forest and spring blossom. Each panel 173 cm high, 60.5 cm wide, 1.8 cm deep
