A rare Thomas Norman Lovatt terracotta pottery bust of 'Te Rangi Pikanga', finely modelled with moko kauae, a woven cloak to her shoulders and two hei tiki to her neck, the base incised with the subject's name and 'T.N. Lovatt, Temuka'. Te Rangi Pikinga born c.1800 was an important figure in Ngati Apa history, witnessing the turmoil of inter-tribal warfare. As a young woman she was captured by a war party led by Te Rauparaha and his nephew Te Rangihaeata, the latter's subsequent chiefly marriage to Pikanga affected a peace between Ngati Apa and Ngati Toa. 23 x 13 x 19 cm.
