An early membership medal for the New Zealand Empire Veteran's Association, the bronze Maltese cross medal suspended from a red, white and blue ribbon and the top bar engraved with the dates '1863-65' suggesting that it was worn by a veteran of the New Zealand Wars. (The Association was set up by the Earl of Ranfurly around 1902 and consisted of veterans of earlier conflicts such as the Indian Mutiny and the Crimean War, of whom there were still a good many living in New Zealand at this time. Ranfurly helped raise funds to set up the Veteran's Home to care for these men who had 'Served the Empire').
