An important Imperially inscribed Chinese silver and gold embellished zitan and lacquer inkstone box, Qianlong mark and of the period (1735-1796), of lobed hexagonal form, with exceptional shallow relief carving of four archaistic taotie masks surrounding a flat square reserve containing a poem by the Qianlong emperor inlaid in silver and with a square inlaid gold seal to the lower left hand corner in seal script, the whole surrounded by a keyfret border. The sides of the box decorated in shallow relief carving with an archaistic taotie mask and scrolling clouds to each side. The inner surface of the lid decorated in thick black lacquer with the Taoist trigram 'Qian' surrounded by two stylized dragons within a circle carved in intaglio to the centre, decorated with gilding inside the intaglio carving.
