The important Somercotes neo classical early colonial double ended blackwood sofa, the fine restrained wave shaped curvilinear backboard with folded vegetalia surmounted by a compact Prince of Wales feather pronounced outswept arms terminating in a circular pater' repeated to each end of the front rail, with an elliptical feature carved pater' to the centre on turned blackwood feet. This elliptical carved pater' is seen on two other early Tasmanian sofas, one being in the Ballarat Gallery, which is also blackwood. Untouched original condition, one of the most dramatic sofas in Australian furniture, the wood has been tested by a wood technologist as: Blackwood - Acacia melanoxylon.
