Bcpa 'Southern Cross' Route Spans The Pacific, c1948 colour process lithograph, 75 x 49 cm. Linen-backed. Text at base 'British Commonwealth Pacific Airlines Ltd. Deaton & Spencer Pty Ltd., Lithographers. Printed in Australia.', British Commonwealth Pacific Airlines or Bcpa, was registered in Sydney, in June 1946. It was formed by the governments of Australia (50%), New Zealand (30%) and the United Kingdom (20%) to pursue trans-Pacific flights. Bcpa was later taken over by Qantas and ceased operations in 1954. The original Bcpa route, depicted in this rare poster, was Sydney - Auckland - Fiji - Canton Island - Hawaii - San Francisco - Vancouver. Flights to and from Melbourne were added later.
