Autographed Letter From Thomas Mitchell, New South Wales Surveyor General, December 1849, A letter signed by 'T.L. Mitchell' headed Surveyor General's Office, Sydney 8th December, 1849 addressed to Mr James Upton, Windsor. The rare letter concerns a request by Upton to lease four 'sections of land in the County of Hunter..on the north side of the Bulga Road..', however, Mitchell points out that according to his records, Upton had already leased the land 'at the Macdonald River' and had, in fact, renewed the lease for 1850. James Upton [1803-1888], born at Parramatta, was already living in the Windsor area when he married Catherine Frazer in 1826. He died in 1888 and the Windsor and Richmond Gazette reported 'He leaves a very large circle of relatives behind him. His funeral, which was largely attended, took place on Sunday last, when his remains were interred in St Matthews Burial Ground at Windsor.
