World War I Australian Flying Corps British War Medal 1914-1918. With ribbon, awarded to Charles Frederick Harvatt & inscribed on the edge '223 1/Am C.F Harvatt A.F.C. A.I.F. Harvatt served with No 1 Squadron as an Air Mechanic. The squadron which was raised in Egypt as the first completely Australian Flying Squadron (see Cutlack chapter 111 Advent of No 1 Squadron p.31). He was discharged on medical grounds in 1916 & was returned to Australia. He re-enlisted in 1918 & was sent to Rabaul to serve with the A.N. & M.E.F. which took control of the ex-German Colonies north of Australia & he was discharged at his own request in November, 1919. Harvatt has the rare and possibly unique distinction of serving with both The Australian Flying Corps & The Australian Naval & Military Expeditionary Force.
