A fine and rare early colonial rose mahogany Circa 1830 136 x 240 x 205 cm (dysoxylon fraserianum), red cedar and gum four-poster full tester bedstead, Australian, Sydney, With the original shaped rails, slats, bolts, long bolt covers and tester. The thickness of the slats increase towards the middle for weight bearing. Opposed rose mahogany 'quilled on the cann' turn work originally an Irish trait in cabinetmaking to the foot posts, full tester of moulded form with 'doughnut' turned adornments and turned finials. Good undisturbed patination. 136 cm wide, 205 cm long, 240 cm high. Provenance: Private Collection, Tasmania Clearance: sale of 'Victoria', Mrs S. C. Thompson's residence, Cooper Street, Byron Bay in the 1960's. This was a substantial clearance: and the Local North Coast newspaper did a feature story on it, reporting 'the bed was originally made for Government House, Parramatta'. (Article supplied).
