An interesting early 1910s silver and enamel bar brooch of suffragette interest, open worked with the initials 'W.S.P.U.' (Women's Social and Political Union) on the lower portion of the brooch with small enamelled 'broad arrow' in the colours of the Union, green white and violet representing the movement's 'slogan': 'Give Women Votes'. This broad arrow symbol is usually seen on the silver 'portcullis' brooch awarded to women who had been imprisoned for the 'cause' possibly suggesting that the original owner may have specially commissioned this item to make a point of difference from the normal award.
