A large and impressive famille-rose 'Dragon and phoenix' vase Qing dynasty, 19th century the tall ovoid body boldly painted in brightly coloured enamels with a pair of dragons pursuing a flaming pearl on one side, and a pair of phoenix in flight on the other, all among branches of full-bloomed peonies, above a band of lappets and a floral scroll around the base, the shoulders with ribbed lug handles picked out in yellow, pink and turquoise set on a turquoise ground of shaped bird and flower vignettes, the yellow-ground cylindrical neck reserved with pairs of ribboned emblems below the broad everted mouth encircled with a green wan diaper border 86 cm high
