Description:
A Iatmul canoe prow, middle Sepik, Papua New-Guinea, collected from Murik lakes in 1979. Wooden carving in the form of a crocodile combining avian features. Crocodiles play a central role in the culture of the Iatmul people as the creation of the world is attributed to an ancestral crocodile. The Art resulting from this belief displays numerous representations of this ancestor that can appear under various forms combining stylized human and animal aspects. It probably used to adorn a canoe that could have been used in warfare, trade or general transportation. Along with 1979 certificate from the Auckland Institute and Museum (former name of the Auckland Museum), height 18 cm, length 2 cm, width 31 cm
