An 1880 L Class tender locomotive, road number '40' (200 x 37 x 50 mm) built by Beyer, Peacock, black livery with gold plated trim, 4-4-0 wheel configuration, rebuilt in 1901, seeing another 30+ years of service before being condemned in 1934. (four L Class locomotives were originally purchased to work on the port line as 4-4-0 tank engines but were found to have too high an axle load for the rails and bridges then in use. This issue was solved with purchase of six-wheeled tenders from Dubs & Co (Scotland) and the removal of the side water tanks which reduced the axle load to an acceptable level).
