An 1879 M Class (M40) tank steam locomotive (125 x 35 x 50 mm), pale green & dark green livery with gold plated trim, 4-4-0 wheel configuration, this example being the pattern engine supplied by Beyer, Peacock & Co . (twenty one further engines were built to this design at the phoenix foundry in Ballarat between 1884 and 1886. Their small coal bunker capacity proved inadequate for the rapidly expanding surburban network of the 1880s and so between 1901 and 1905 they were rebuilt at the Newport Workshops as 4-4-2 locomotives with an enlarged coal bunker).
