A Chamberlain's Worcester armorial serving dish and cover, 18th century, the fan shaped dish and lid both heavily gilded in a seaweed pattern enclosing a finely painted coat of arms for Edward lake, along with the motto 'Un Dieu, Un Roi, Un Coeur'. Probably made for the marriage of Royal Navy Lieutenant Willoughby Thomas lake to Charlotte MacBride at Northwood, Hampshire, on May 19th, 1795. The lid embellished with a dolphin form handle. Puce factory mark to base. Along with a matching trio. 17.5 cm wide, 9.5 cm high. Provenance: The John Scarce Collection of Porcelain. Other Notes: Edward Lake fought for Charles 1st at the Battle of Edgehill in 1642, the first major battle of the English civil war, receiving sixteen wounds to his body and losing the use of his left arm. Despite his wounds he fought on, placing the reins of his horse between his teeth and wielding his sword with his right hand. An augmentation was made to Edward Lake's armorial bearings in the form of a second crest of a wounded knight, left arm hanging useless by his side, his horse's reins held by his teeth. The first quarter of his arms was also changed to show an armoured hand holding a banner with the lion of England and sixteen Red Crosses representing his 16 wounds. He was later created a baronet.
