A large French Louis XVI period ormolu and verde marble clock, signed 'Revel a Paris' for the master horologer Joseph-Marie Revel (1775-1811). With exceptional gilt bronze mounts, the drumshaped case below and eagle against which are two classical figures representing reading and writing, with a central plaque of a woman and putti at a torchiene, mounts of sphinxes and roundels with the head of Hermes.
