Description:
Carbine: Display comprising pair of Carbine's horse-shoes, mounted with tin photographs (in terrible condition) of Carbine and jockey (probably R Ramage rider for 1890 Melbourne Cup) & plaque engraved 'Carbine 1890', overall 43 x 49 cm. Marked on reverse 'T.Mason, Maker, Braybrook'. Provenance: ex Lederberg Stud, the home of Carbine until 1895. Despite this provenance, we cannot guarantee these shoes were worn by Carbine. (Carbine started 43 times for 33 wins, 6 seconds & 3 thirds; his wins include Sydney Cup in 1889 & 1890; and Melbourne Cup in 1890. Carbine was a leading sire in Australia, and was then purchased by the Duke of Portland for 13,000 guineas; more than half of the 65 Melbourne Cup winners from 1914 to 1978 were descendants of Carbine, including Comic Court, Phar Lap, Rising Fast, Rain Lover & Think Big).
