A Greek bronze 'Hydria' urn possibly Hellenistic period, circa 3rd century, of baluster form, with egg and dart relief decoration to overted lip, the whole flanked by two handles and raised on a circular foot, the lovely patina revealing natural breaks to the fine bronze surface consistent with age, the vase 46 cm high, total height 54 cm. Provenance: acquired by a member of the German diplomatic service in Istanbul, Ankara and Thessaloniki, 1920s to early 1930s, and imported into Germany at that time; thence by descent to current owner.
