A buff sandstone head, Avalokitesvara or Shiva, Khmer, Bayon period, late 12th/early 13th century, the Bayon period and Javamayan VII was dominated by Buddhism. This head probably originated as Avalokitesvara and was later modified to be Shiva as indicated by the addition of the third eye and the effacing of the seated Amitayus that would have been evident at the front of the chignon. 33 cm wide x 33 cm deep x 54 cm high.
