Description:
Tavern clock or Act of Parliament clock, Chinoiserie case on oak, England, mid 19th century. 8 day weight driven movement with long pendulum beating true seconds. These large and very accurate clocks were produced from the 1730s onwards and were placed in taverns and Inns throughout Britain. Often referred to as Act of Parliament clocks, in 1797 the British Government levied a yearly tax of 5 shillings on all clocks. the unpopular tax was repealed a year later. In the 20th century it was often believed that these large clocks were located in public places due to the fact that owning a clock would have been prohibitively expensive for most people. However tavern clocks predate the Act by several decades. 160 cm high
