Victorian sterling silver presentation salver, hallmarked London, 1856, EB&JB (Edward & John Barnard) with pierced scrollwork and foliate border accented with floral motifs, with central cartouche reading 'This salver accompanied by a purse containing $550 was presented to William Thorp Esquire, Alderman & Magistrate of the city of Oxford, by friends in the University, city and County, in token of their Regard and Esteem, for one whose long life has, under divine providence, been signally marked by a devotion to the cause of Christian Charity, marked with an active participation in the secular duties of his station, in his Native city of which he has three times served the Honourable office of Mayor, 5th May 1857,' surrounded by engraved acanthus, c-scroll and floral sprays, the whole raised on three scroll and acanthus feet, total weight 1497gm, diameter 38.5 cm
