An uncommon World War I Somes Island Wellington Harbour New Zealand woods hinged lid box, made by an 'Enemy Alien' interned on Somes Island, the kauri carcass with other exotic New Zealand timbers parquetry inlaid, sectional interior. 41.5 x 25.5 x 10.5 cm. Provenance: A note included detailing 'This has been passed down, my grandfather who died in 1972 aged 88 bought this home from World War I. The story is it was made by prisoners-of-war on Somes Island off Wellington...'. Note: it is possible that this could be the work of the German-born Hans Hansen, see further notes with this lot
