A pair of ornate silverplate champagne buckets, 19th century, with flared ribbed rims, naturalistic handles, raised on flared shell bases, each bucket is engraved with a coat of arms with a cartouche below reading 'Fide Et Virtute', each 25.5 cm high, 24 cm diameter. Other Notes: The latin phrase 'Fide Et Virtute' translates to 'By Faith and by Courage' which also happens to be the motto of William Ewart Gladstone (1809 - 1898), a British statesman and Liberal party politician. In a career lasting over sixty years, he served for twelve years as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, spread over four terms beginning in 1868 and ending in 1894. He is also the person to whom the Gladstone bag was named after.
