A Japanese enamelled Kyoyaki tea bowl, Kiyomizu, Kyoto, Meiji period (1868-1912), the stoneware teabowl of typical Kyoyaki type with pale body and crackled straw coloured glaze, with enamel painting and gilding depicting a 'Shojo' drinking sake with a sake jar beside him. 'Shojo' is a mythical sake drinking creature that is first mentioned in the Chinese classic 'Shan Hai Jing' as a 'Sheng Sheng'. Unmarked, 7 cm high, 11.5 cm diameter
