A large Chinese carved cinnabar lacquer box, Qianlong period (1736-1795), the square box deeply carved depicting a gathering of scholars drinking wine with attendants in a landscape with mountains in the background, all within a shaped reserve to the centre of the lid, surrounded by scrolling Indian lotus. The background of the figures and surround, and the sides of the box carved with different complex diaper motifs, the interior lacquered plain black, 6 cm high, 22 cm wide, 22 cm deep.
