Maj-Gen. Horatio Gordon Robley (UK/NZ 1840-1930), The Surrender of the Ngai-te-Rangi at Te Papa Mission Station, Bay of Plenty, New Zealand, July 1864', watercolour, signed H.G.Robley, Durham Lt. Inftry. lower left and inscribed Surrender of Ngaiterangi, Te Papa July 1864 lower right. Additionally, inscribed verso with some details of participants and the site. 19 cm x 30 cm. Provenance: Private Estate Collection. This historic work depicts Maori after the Battle of Te Renga (Pyes Pa), two months earlier they had participated defeat of the British at Gate Pa. Robley produced three known versions of this work, this one, another that appeared in James Cowan's book The New Zealand Wars, the third was used by the London Illustrated News, the original of which was sold by Sotheby's Australia in 1985 for A$10,350.
