Description:
A model Well-Head, Han Dynasty. Model made of red pottery with arched pulley-support and a bucket with moulded bosses on the well's rim, all under an iridescent green glaze. The base and some of the inside of the well and bucket are unglazed. The square frame of the pulley housing shows a small pulley but no roof. The bucket originally had two outward-sloping handles but one has been broken and the other has been drilled. There are various chips and flakes. Compare well-heads in plates 190-193 of spirit of Han, Southeast Asian ceramic Society, 1991 and plates 98, 100 and 101 of illustrated catalogues of Tokyo National Museum-Chinese ceramics 1 1988.
