A Cizhou figure of lady, Jin Dynasty (1154-1234), model of a lady, probably a servant, with both hands in front of her and a worried look on her face holding a draped cloth beneath a vase of flowers. The model is painted in black and brown with additional red and green pigments on a cream ground. This figure is remarkably well moulded, the profile, as well as the fore-and-aft view, are surprisingly good for so small a model. Models of this type are said to be rare in the song, much more common in the Tang (618-906) and Jin (1115-1234), though this particular figure was catalogued by Sotheby's as song. Probably made at Pacun (Patsun) in Henan. For a very similar, but larger, figurine see Wirgin, Sung ceramic designs, 1979, plate 57e and text on Pi 21. Provenance: The Dr. Francis De Hamel collection, height 11.5 cm
