A tripod Ding and cover, Han Dynasty. A ding of grey pottery decorated in red, white and ochre pigments. The cover has a flat circular rim, painted white, to act as a base when the lid is inverted. Within this rim is a quatrefoil design of red, white and ochre. Round the sides of the lid is a swirling trifoliate design with a broad white decorative band where it fits the body of the ding. The body of the vessel has two upright pierced and squared-off handles, one of which has been broken off and re-stuck. It is decorated with three floral designs in ochre and white. The vessel rests on three rather bulbous feet. Both the lid and the base were potted on a clockwise-rotating wheel. For the identical body, ornamentation sees Fig 38 of illustrated catalogues of Tokyo National Museum, Chinese ceramics 1 1988. Provenance: The Dr. Francis De Hamel collection, height 13.5 cm, depth 16.5 cm
