Description:
A covered box, Han Dynasty. Box of grey pottery of a circular shape with painted ornamentation in red, ochre and white pigments. The center of the lid has a quatrefoil design while the outer part has a swirling trifoliate design in the same colours. There is a broad white band around the midriff. The lower half of the box has the same pattern of trifoliate floral design as is seen in no 74. The shaped base is slightly concave. For a similarly decorated box see Fig 38 of illustrated catalogues of Tokyo National Museum, Chinese ceramics 1 1988. A similar box is also seen in the black and white photograph Fig 120 on page 206 of Sekai Toji Zenshu, vol 10. Provenance: The Dr. Francis De Hamel collection, height 11 cm, depth 16 cm
