A Longquan bowl, Southern Song dynasty. Bowl carved on the outside with deep rather irregularly-carved flutes. The inside shows two carved circles at the well and three carved rings near the rim. The bluish opalescent crackled, rather degraded, the celadon glaze has run down and partly covered the deep and slightly crooked footing. The latter has been trimmed with an upwardly sloping knife-cut. The base has been burnt red-brown in the firing. The bowl was fired on a fireclay ring three cm in diameter, the black residue of which can be seen on the base. There are two old rim-cracks. Provenance: The Dr. Francis De Hamel collection, height 7 cm, depth 13.5 cm
