Chinese late Qing Dynasty child's Amulet wind hat, c.1890, in purple silk, adorned with amulets of the eight immortals across the forehead and a central amulet of the God of longevity, below a band of animal hair, amulets of animals over the ears and bells along the base, embroidered overall with flowers in tones of pink and cream, height 41 cm catalogue note: the animal hair was to confuse evil spirits into thinking the child was an animal and so would be protected. Also the animal amulets along with the bells were to protect the child. Provenance: Collection of Judith Rutherford
