Description:
An impressive embroidered silk and ivory-inset carved wood four-panel screen late Qing dynasty, the ivory silk ground of each panel embroidered in coloured silks with many different species of birds in pairs, including peacocks, quails, roosters, song birds, cranes, eagles, doves, pheasants, parrots and a phoenix, interspersed with butterflies, all in flight or perched in a setting of trees including maple and pine, and flowering plants, including peonies, prunus, chrysanthemum and lilies growing beside ornamental rockwork, the hardwood frames inset with differently shaped ivory panels each intricately carved in relief on pierced diaper grounds, some depicting figures in pavilion gardens, others of blossoming branches and others of fish and crustacea, the similarly inset wood crests and lower panels carved with openwork flowers and foliage, each panel 184 cm high, 59 cm wide.
