Description:
A set of three Aubusson tapestry window pelmets and chutes, Requillart, Roussel & Chocqueel, 1864, each representing a different fable by La Fontaine, the first depicting a scene of a male bird catcher, titled 'L'Oiseleur, L'Autour et L'Alouette', the second depicting a scene of a tortoise suspended on a stick between two ducks, titled 'La Tortue et les deux Canards', the third depicting a scene of jay birds clutching peacock feathers, titled 'La Geai pare des plumes du Paon', the Fables of Jean De La Fontaine, 450 x 280 cm approximately (each varying in size). Provenance: John Edward Cornwallis Rous, 2nd Earl of Stradbroke (1794-1886), These tapestry pelmets and chutes were supplied to the 2nd Earl of Stradbroke in 1864. They formed part of a much larger order that was made during the renovations at Henham Hall between 1863-1865, Christie's, Australia, 16th November 1998, Decorative Arts, lot 357, Literature: Country Style, Australia, September 1999, pg 22.
