A 19th century Chinese finely carved ivory fan, opening to reveal various figures within a landscape including pagoda and other buildings and vessels, the centre with oval cartouche framing the initials 'MK', minor loss. Provenance: 'This fan is believed to have been owned by... Mary Kempson whose initials are carved on the fan (Mary subsequently married Sarah's Great, Great Grandfather Charles). Mary Kempson's brother, William Kempson, served with the 99th Regiment of Foot of the British Army, and served in the 1860 War of China. It is assumed that he obtained the fan during that time...'.
