A rare and special 19th century Italian rococo bedroom suite, ex. the estate of Phyllis Brusey of Wellington, comprising a large three section mirrored door armoire with high relief and ornate scroll, floral and mask detail, 205 cm x 62 cm x 255 cm. The bed of conforming ornate style, the headboard with relief carved pair of cherubs to the centre, ornately framed in classical design. 168 cm x 10 cm x 204 cm, the conforming foot board with further cherub pair in a landscape of trees. 169 cm x 7 cm x 112 cm, the Duchess of serpentine form with three drawers to the left and single shaped drawer above the open kneehole section, the tall mirrored back of three panels 112 cm x 47 cm x 230 cm, the commode with ornate tall swing mirrored back, the surmounting pediment with mask in relief of a young woman, the serpentine marble top above the two door serpentine shaped base. 126 cm x 68 cm x 230 cm. Some borer and damage commensurate with age. Note: Phyllis Brusey was a noted N.Z. antique dealer, Wellington based, through a good part of the mid-20th century and director and chairperson of the N.Z. Opera company, her memoirs are recorded in the book she wrote 'Ring Down The Curtain', first published 1973. Mrs Brusey inherited this bedroom suite from her parents and it remained with her for her life even managing to squeeze it into her last home, a penthouse Oriental Bay apartment. It was purchased by our vendor from her estate auction, Wellington c.1980s.
