Description:
Four relics, including air frame parts and motor Casting from Lancaster Ed 925 Crash Site, 17/5/1943, shot down over the Mohne Dam, pilot was F/L Hopgood. P/O J.W.Fraser Rcaf and P/O Burcher RAAF managed to back out at low level, 2 of 3 aircrew to becom POWs on the Dams raid. Sgt. J.W. Minchin was severely wounded on the way to the Dam, he was given morphine and put on the rest bed. When the plane was hit, Hopgood desperately tried to gain height for his crew to bale out. As Burcher was to jump he saw his friend Minchin crawling down the fuselage, his leg almost severed. Although burcher knew every second was paramount in his own survival, he helped his friend to the escape door, opened his parachute and pushed him out, even though he knew his chances of survival because of his injuries were slight. Sadly, Minchin didn't survive, but what a selfless, brave act by Burcher. Alan brown mounted these relics to the board. He was one of the original aviation archaeologists and travelled all over the UK and Europe visiting crash sites. Provenance: Alan brown, England Thence by descent, Andrew church collection
