Description:
M. Exler & Son (Avondale Pottery, Auckland), pair of flat backed lion mantle ornaments, c. 1900, press moulded and covered in brown and cream salt glazes. The two pieces were made with the same mould but are of slight different sizes probably due to different shrinking during firing., the larger, height 18 cm, a very similar piece is illustrated in Gail Henry, New Zealand Pottery (Auckland, 1999 ed), p. 144.
