A sterling silver Victorian presentation trowel of Australian interest, by Kilpatrick & Co, London 1869, the elongated diamond shaped blade with an engraved bead border and cartouche inscribed 'Presented / to the / Hon'ble James Balfour Mlc / on the / occasion of laying / the / memorial stone / of the / congregational church / Brighton / 15th June / 1875', with a plain 'torpedo shaped' ivory handle, in a fitted hinged lid case bearing both internally and externally the retail stickers for Kilpatrick & Co of London and Melbourne, 33.5 cm long. Provenance: Presented to James Balfour (1830-1913) in 1875, thence by descent to the present owner.
